Biography:
With one of the most recognizable voices in the industry and a string of awards and recognitions complimenting it, Kumar Sanu's status in the world of music is unparralled.
Born in Calcutta in the year 1957, Sanu's real name is Kedernath Bhattacharjee. His father Pashupati Bhattacharjee was an accomplished classical vocalist and Sanu took his initial training in music from his father.
After completing his graduation in commerce from Calcutta University in 1979, Sanu began performing publicly, singing at shows and restaurants in and around Calcutta in a style heavily influenced from film legend Kishore Kumar. Inspite of being a talented and versatile singer Sanu couldn't make a breakthrough into the film industry for a long time and it took him several years to land his first big break. He used to earn his living largely by singing live and recording songs for a series of Kishore Kumar covers for a pop label.
In 1987, Jagjit Singh offered Sanu a chance to sing in a Hindi film called "Andhiyan". Sanu decided to relocate to Mumbai, and soon landed another film "Jadoogar" the music for which was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Sensing his potential they gave "Sanu" his stage name, partly to give him wider appeal outside of a strictly Bengali audience, and partly because of the heavy influence of his idol.
Sanu's work in these films made others take notice of him and he landed up with his first hit in 1990 with the film "Aashiqui", whose soundtrack was composed and directed by the Nadeem/Shravan team. Sanu sang all the songs in this movie and one of the songs featured in this album, made him a star and also won him the first of his record five consecutive Filmfare awards as the Best Male Playback Singer. Sanu started getting offers from every big name in the industry and he started lending his voice to everyone. He again won the Filmfare award next year for "Saajan". Next came "Deewana", "Baazigar", and "1942: A Love Story", three best selling albums alongwith three consecutive awards taking his total tally to five.
Always ready to take on new challenges, Sanu has also acted in a Bengali film. He also started doing more stage shows in foreign shores than recording albums. By the turn of the millennium, Sanu too decided to follow Lata Mangeshkar's footsteps by not accepting any further Filmfare awards in order to make room for new talent.
