Biography:
Sanjay Dutt, whose recent release "Shootout at Lokhandwala", based on a shocking
real-life incident, churned out huge box office collections and earned him rave reviews, has been handed six years 'rigorous imprisonment for illegal possession of weapons, including an AK-56 rifle, in the 1993 Mumbai terror bombings on July 31.
Special judge of the anti-terror TADA court P.D. Kode disregarded the actor's plea for leniency under the Probation of Offenders Act (PoA) for good behaviour through the last 14 years of the trial and refused to extend his bail.
Sanjay, who has already served jail for 16 months, had been convicted under the Arms Act for possessing a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle but absolved of terror charges.
His lawyers said they would appeal the decision in the Supreme Court.
The serial blasts in March 1993 killed 257 people and was considered one of the world's worst terror acts.
The seasoned actor, who turned 48, Sunday, did not celebrate his birthday and instead opted
for a puja at his Bandra residence.
The star, whose popularity soared to new highs last year with
blockbuster-hit "Lage Raho Munnabhai" is the son of legendary Nargis and Sunil Dutt. He was born on 29th July 1959 with
the silver spoon and a fate to face controversies.
As a child artist in 1971, Sanjay made a brief appearance in "Reshma Aur
Shera", directed by his father.
